Recently, Humboldt’s own, Vicky Crisp visited these two parks on a spectacular safari.  After a night in Nairobi, the trip started with a 35-minute charter flight to Loisaba airstrip.

Located in the northern part of Kenya, Loisaba Conservancy is a hidden treasure known for its stunning scenery, wide open spaces, and commitment to conservation. Spanning over 56,000 acres, Loisaba is a sanctuary for both endangered species and wildlife enthusiasts looking for a unique safari experience. Its location along the Laikipia Plateau provides an ideal backdrop for exploring the diverse ecosystems of the area.

Loisaba is home to an impressive variety of animals, including the “Big Five” (lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes, and rhinos), as well as other species including giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, and hippos. Three of the Big Five were spotted within the first 24 hours of being in Loisaba. The leopards and buffalo remained elusive but safari is not just about ticking off species but the overall experience.

Staying at the luxurious Loisaba Tented Camp allows guests to feel immersed in their surroundings. The custom-built tents are spacious and airy  with large floor-to-ceiling doors and windows, high ceilings and polished wooden floors. The view from the camp is incredible, and the food and service matches the best of any five star hotel around the world. A particular highlight is the bush breakfasts after the early morning game drives. The team would find the most beautiful locations to stop for breakfast, and the quality of the food that was served out in the bush was mind blowing!

After Loisaba it was time to head back to the airstrip for the next short charter flight to Meru. Although only a short 35 minute flight away the landscape is completely different; a lot greener and more rugged.

Due to flourishing flora after the rains the wildlife was a bit more difficult to spot however it didn’t take away from an absolutely incredible experience. The scenery was stunning and the ambiance is one of complete relaxation.

Although wildlife sightings were not the same as in Loisaba, elephants, zebras, buffalo, giraffes, plenty of birds and a pride of lions all made an appearance. The park is particularly famous for its role in the story of Elsa the lioness, whose life was immortalized in the book and film Born Free.

Staying at Elsa kopje was a more rustic safari experience, the camp was just as stunning as the tented camp in Loisaba however there is a greater sense of  being close to nature.

For those seeking a comprehensive Kenyan safari experience, combining Loisaba and Meru in one trip is an excellent choice. While Loisaba offers a luxurious, eco-friendly escape with a focus on conservation, Meru provides a more serene, off-the-beaten-path safari experience filled with wildlife and rich history. The contrasting landscapes and activities found in these two areas offer a spectacular trip incorporating some of the best of Kenya.
