HUMBOLDT CHARITY SUPPORT

We are often asked what made us choose travel, why are we so passionate about the countries we sell. The answer is easy, the people, the culture, the wildlife, everything that makes these countries the vibrant and fascinating places they are. It is because of this passion for the countries we sell that we decided to give something back to the people that give us so much when we travel there.

The world is becoming ever more accessible for us as travellers and we can reach even the most remote destinations. This brings a lot of joy and new experiences as a tourist and it opens up wonderful possibilities for the modern traveller. Here at Humboldt, we believe that this should also open up such possibilities for the local communities in these countries.

Responsible travel is an integral part of what we do, creating an ethical ethos in tourism, tourism as a force for good, that supports the local community rather than exploiting it. This is about more than just dropping some loose change into a begging bowl and we have worked with our partners in the respective countries to find projects that really mean something. This might be an environmental project which works with a specific national park, preserving the landscape and the ecosystem, or a local community, helping them to preserve their culture and showcase it to visiting tourists. Perhaps it is a conservation project, helping protect a particular species or charity that supports otherwise marginalised groups in these very different cultures.

Humboldt donates to a nominated charity for each person that we send to that country. This means that when you travel with us, you are giving back to the country in more ways than one. You are supporting a women’s cooperative, a wildlife project, a children’s foundation, something that helps to preserve the culture and landscape or support the community in each of these beautiful countries. You are giving and you are gaining through the beauty of travel.

ANTARCTIC HERITAGE TRUST

A fascinating charity working to preserve Britain’s heritage in Antarctica, telling the important story of the discovery and exploration and preserving artefacts from this remote and beautiful area.

ESCUELA AURELIO PARGADE

An important school on Isla Victoria in Argentina’s Lake District. It provides education and support for children from poorer families of this remote, rural community.

TIDE

BELIZE

Conservation, research and outreach in Belize’s spectacular Toledo District. TIDE supports the conservation and protection of the Maya Mountain Corridor and Port Honduras Marine Reserve.

LA SENDA VERDE

A wonderful project rehabilitating animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. With over 800 rescued animals, all native to Bolivia, there is a strong focus on preserving the natural ecosystem.

ONCAFARI

Located at the best lodge in the Brazilian Pantanal, this project protects the beautiful jaguar. Visitors learn about the project and have the chance to spot these fabulous creatures in their natural habitat.

AWASI FOUNDATION

A conservation project created to protect the wildlife of Torres del Paine. Working with locals, they are creating a protected territory for the species in this unique environment.

FUNDACION ALUNA

A very special organisation working with children from poorer backgrounds who have mental and physical disabilities. They provide schooling, rehabilitation and support for their families.

SOMOS

An amazing initiative helping to develop local communities on Costa Rica’s Central and South Pacific coast. Its focus is on sustainable development and social enterprise.

CUBA LIBRO

A coffeehouse and bookstore that provides amazing support to many organisations through Cuba from orphanages to schools to hospitals. They work hard to provide help where little is found.

GCT

A vital part of the preservation of this very special part of the world. The Galapagos Conservation Trust works hard to ensure that the islands and the many species inhabiting them are protected.

SOL Y LUNA FOUNDATION

An amazing organisation linked to a beautiful hotel and providing holistic support to the vulnerable children of Peru’s Sacred Valley and their families through homes, schooling and health care.

CEPRODIH

A women’s cooperative, this amazing charity supports vulnerable families, particularly mothers who need extra support so that they can care for their families with dignity and independence.

SAMBHALI TRUST

The name Sambhali means ‘strengthening of the deprived’ and this grassroots cooperative encourages Rajasthani women to gain their dignity and self-confidence by giving them skills to support their families.

RIDE 4 A WOMAN

An organisation created for women in Uganda to support them in their struggles with poverty, abuse and HIV. They are empowered to learn new skills to support their families and realise their potential.

UTHANDO

A beautiful organisation that supports a number of community, health and social enterprise projects in South Africa. Uthando promotes responsible tourism, philanthropy and empowerment of local people.

HEARTPRINT

Heartprint is a Cambodian NGO that does amazing work providing support and inclusion through housing, education and work opportunities for families in need in Cambodia.

ESO

ESO is the Environment Society of Oman, the only non-profit organisation in Oman that works to protect Oman’s natural environment through research, education and advocacy.

RECLAIM CHILDHOOD

Reclaim Childhood works with local and refugee girls in Jordan, helping to create safe and inclusive communities for them to flourish through sports and working with coaches.
