TAYKA DE PIEDRA
This exceptionally remote hotel is situated in a privileged location to the south of the Uyuni Salt Flats, in the wilds of the Bolivian altiplano, just 170km from the town of Calama across the Chilean border.
Named after the volcanic rock – ‘piedra’ – from which it is constructed, this charming hotel is nearest to the lazy town of San Pedro de Quemes and has a simple design inspired by the standout features of its picturesque environment – volcanoes, windswept rocky valleys and scattered pre-Columbian ruins.
Boasting striking views of the surreal landscapes from the property, this welcoming hotel offers warm and traditional Bolivian hospitality. Understandably lacking the glossy touches of high-end hotels in other less isolated regions, guests can expect to enjoy a cosy bed, free coca tea (it helps with the altitude), and hearty local cuisine during their stay at Tayka de Piedra.
The hotel facilities include two covered courtyards and a spacious communal lounge area with a large fireplace for the chilly nights on the altiplano. A relaxed and friendly restaurant serves tasty Bolivian cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner and can provide boxed lunches for those who wish to head out into the wilderness exploring. Rooms feature stone walls and furnishings, with handmade local textiles adding a splash of colour. Each room offers a private bathroom, hot water and heating.
Situated close to the stunning Mirador Caltama, we suggest rising early and heading up to this lookout point for magnificent views of the surrounding scenery.
